In recent months, several lines of beauty products targeted specifically to perimenopausal and menopausal women have hit the marketplace. Just like hormone replacement therapy can target the specific needs of individual women, these products are attempting to cater to the needs of women in a very specific age range. But will they be as successful as HRT in providing results?
A New Line from a Former Executive at Procter & Gamble
Better Not Younger, a beauty line from Sonsoles Gonzalez, who previously held an executive position at Proctor & Gamble, is a collection of haircare products described as “upscale.” The company is hoping to help women with hair issues that are commonly experienced during menopause, such as thinning and dry hair.
Gonzalez acknowledges that when she began going through menopause more than a decade ago, there were no products available to address her dry, thinning hair. She noted that most products aimed toward older women at the time worked only to “hide” problems.
Today’s Menopausal Women Have a Different Mindset
By 2020 there will be more than 50 million women in the U.S. who are older than 51, which is the average age at which a woman goes through menopause. In decades past, women entering their 50s were more likely to feel matronly and unsexy. This is no longer the case, according to Gonzalez and her research. She finds that today’s 50-year-old-women feel sexy and confident.
Other Companies Are Coming to the Table
It’s not just Better Not Younger in this field. Various companies geared toward women in their 50s and beyond offer hair loss serums, supplements, over-the-counter products that promise to improve sexual arousal, skin-care products, mist sprays to reduce hot flashes, and even a line from Proctor & Gamble that includes a lubricant for vaginal dryness.
These products are unique not only in that they are designed for an older demographic, but also because they are generally packaged elegantly and priced high.
This Increase in Products for Menopausal Women is Not All Good News
At Renew Youth, we’re champions for aging better and beautifully. That said, our concern is that some of these products may make promises they can’t keep. Using an over-the-counter spray to address hot flashes or a shampoo to address hair loss could be problematic if it delays or prevents women from addressing the underlying cause of such symptoms: hormone imbalance.
Renew Youth is proud to provide safe, effective, doctor-supervised hormone replacement therapy that is tailored to each woman’s unique needs and is designed to address the underlying cause of the symptoms most commonly associated with perimenopause and menopause.
