You know the phrase…“grow old gracefully”.

But is growing old gracefully something you should do?

Generally, when someone says that you should grow old gracefully, what they really mean is that you should simply accept the limitations that come with getting older. In other words…just deal with it.

It’s true that with age your body will change. You may not be able to do absolutely everything you could do when you were in your 20s and 30s. However, it doesn’t mean retiring to your rocking chair, either.

It is actually possible for the second half of your life to contain some of your healthiest years. These years also tend to be ones where you have time do the things you didn’t have time for when you were younger.

But to make the most of this new phase in life, there are some things you need to do:

Eat Right

The old saying is true…you are what you eat. And this is even more true as we age.

Why? Because starting in your 30s, your metabolism begins to slow down. Carbs that readily turned into energy during younger years now turn into fat.

It also becomes harder for your body to burn fat…so it tends to build up, mostly around the midsection.

The following adjustments will help to compensate for these changes:

  • Avoid carbohydrates, especially sugar.
  • Eat lean protein with every meal.
  • Reduce your portion sizes.
  • Consider intermittent fasting and the keto approach to eating to speed up your metabolism.

Follow these guidelines and your body will get the nutrition it needs, without putting on excess weight.

Exercise

To be blunt…get off the couch and stay active.

Thirty minutes of cardio done four or five times per week will keep your heart and lungs in good shape. Include resistance training to avoid the muscle loss that can accompany aging. Regular exercise will also keep your bones strong.

Stay Active Mentally

Your muscles aren’t the only part of you that needs regular workouts. So does your brain. Your brain is like any other part of your body…if you don’t keep it in shape, it will get sluggish. Make sure you’re intellectually challenged on a day-to-day basis.

Keep Your Hormones Balanced

Hormones regulate everything in your body from muscle and bone growth to your sex drive. Unfortunately, with age our bodies produce less and less of these vital chemicals.

The result can be symptoms including:

  • Brain fog and memory issues
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of muscle and bone mass
  • Weight gain
  • Insomnia
  • Low libido and sexual dysfunction
  • Irritability, anxiety, depression, and mood swings
  • Insomnia
  • Hot flashes and night sweats

Properly supervised hormone replacement therapy can relieve these symptoms and keep your body operating at its best…now and in the future.
