Weight Gain in Women
For better or worse, women in our society are conditioned to be weight conscious. Another unfortunate reality is that age-related weight gain can make women even more self-conscious.
Facts
- About 90% of women will experience age-related weight gain.
- That weight is likely to be gained around the midsection.
- Most women will gain 10-15 pounds if hormone imbalances are untreated.
Causes of Weight Gain
Low Estrogen
Estrogen is produced by the ovaries (primarily) but is also produced by fat cells. As the ovaries produce less estrogen, the body compensates by holding onto fat.
Low Progesterone
Imbalances between progesterone and estrogen can cause weight gain, water retention, and bloating during perimenopause.
Low Testosterone
Testosterone directly impacts the body’s ability to build muscle mass. The less muscle you have, the fewer calories you will burn.
Thyroid
Since thyroid is responsible for regulating calorie consumption, low thyroid can result in a diminished metabolic rate.
