“Methylene blue.”

It sounds like an industrial dye, doesn’t it? Well…that may be because it is an industrial dye.

But…believe it or not…methylene blue also has numerous health benefits when ingested.

Keep reading to learn more about methylene blue, and how it can support better health.

The History of Methylene Blue

Methylene blue was first synthesized in 1876 by a German chemist named Heinrich Caro. Soon after its development, this compound became popular within the textiles industry for dyeing fabrics.

But within a matter of years, scientists discovered that methylene blue also had promising medical applications.

One of methylene blue’s earlier medical applications was for the treatment of malaria (before more advanced treatments became available). Later, methylene blue was used for treating a rare blood disorder (called methemoglobinemia), as well as for treating urinary tract infections and some types of cancer.

These earlier uses set the stage for additional medical applications further down the road. Today, researchers are looking at methylene blue’s potential for treating Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the treatment of sepsis.

Which brings us to its potential within the arena of longevity and healthy aging…

Methylene Blue’s Broader Health Benefits

Over the past 150 years, researchers have learned a lot about how methylene blue interacts with the body to support good health and fight disease.

Specifically, methylene blue acts as an antioxidant, an antiviral, and an anti-microbial agent.

Areas of health that can be positively impacted by methylene blue include:

  1. Brain Health

Methylene blue reduces oxidative stress and supports mitochondrial activity within brain cells. The result can be improved memory and focus, and a reduced risk for developing cognitive decline. Some studies suggest methylene blue may also help with mood regulation.

  2. Mitochondrial Function

Methylene blue supports mitochondrial activity, which increases cellular energy production and reduces cellular stress.

  3. Oxygen Delivery

Methylene blue helps red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout the body more efficiently. In addition to enhancing overall health, improvements in cellular oxygen supply can improve endurance and recovery.

  4. Detoxification

The antioxidant properties of methylene blue can help the body to eliminate free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress.

Proper Use of Methylene Blue

Like any medical compound, methylene blue must be used correctly for it to be both safe and effective. In other words, it should only be taken under medical supervision.
