Fatigue can be a real drag, making it hard to live life to the fullest.

People can suffer from fatigue for a variety of reasons…including hormone imbalances, illness, and sleep disorders.

And then there’s a less obvious culprit: nutritional deficiencies. The good news about this particular cause is that nutritional supplements can be an easy way to boost your energy level.

Let’s look at five supplements that might help you to put the pep back in your step

1. NAD+

NAD stands for “nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide”. NAD+ is a coenzyme that helps your cells convert food into energy.

Specifically, your cells use NAD+ to produce a compound called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP functions kind of like a battery within your body, both storing and releasing energy.

NAD+ levels tend to decline with age, which can slow energy production and cause fatigue. Conversely, supplementing NAD+ can improve cellular function and energy levels.

2. Iron

Iron is a key component of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body.

Without enough iron, your muscles and organs won’t get the oxygen they need, resulting in exhaustion and weakness—a condition known as iron deficiency anemia.

While it is essential to have adequate levels of iron for good health, too much can be toxic. Before supplementing iron, blood levels should be checked to determine whether or not you have a deficiency.

3. Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a powerhouse when it comes to energy. Among many other things, B12 is essential for the health of your nerves and for the formation of red blood cells.

People who are B12 deficient often feel tired and weak, in addition to having issues with memory and mood. Because many people don’t absorb B12 well through the digestive tract, B12 injections can be a more effective method of delivery than oral supplementation.

4. Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions throughout the body. One of these biochemical reactions is the production of energy.

As a consequence, low magnesium levels can lead to fatigue.

Few people get sufficient magnesium from diet alone, making supplementation a necessity for many people.

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin D isn’t just important for bone health. It also supports muscle function, immune system health, mood stability, and energy production.

Vitamin D comes from the food you eat. Your body also makes it in response to sun exposure.

But…very few people get sufficient amounts of vitamin D on a day-to-day basis (whether it be from food or from sunlight). For these people, vitamin D supplements can fill in the gap.

Keep in mind that, though, that vitamin D (like iron) can be toxic if you take more than what your body needs. Once again, blood levels should be checked before supplementing this particular nutrient.

Do You Need An Energy Boost?

If you feel like you’re dragging, supplementing NAD+, iron, vitamin B12, magnesium, and vitamin D might help. But remember…before supplementing iron or vitamin D, it’s important to check blood levels first.
