As men age, their testosterone levels decline.  No man escapes this reality.  In fact, studies have shown that on average, a man’s testosterone levels will fall by 1% each year starting at the age of 30. While 1% may not sound like a lot, it adds up over the years.  This decline in testosterone is known as andropause (or male menopause), and it can eventually lead to low sex drive, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, insomnia, hot flashes, difficulty concentrating, and weight gain.

Weight gain is especially consternating as men get older because it usually accumulates around the midsection. And many men become frustrated because no matter what they do by way of diet and exercise, keeping weight off can feel impossible.

Too often men don’t realize that low testosterone is the culprit in this equation. And as long as testosterone levels are deficient, trying to manage weight will feel like pushing a rock uphill.

This is because a man’s testosterone levels are directly tied to his metabolism, and as testosterone levels drop, metabolism slows.  And a slower metabolism leads to weight gain.

While appearance is important to most men, it shouldn’t be the only source of concern. Low testosterone levels and an increase in fat deposits, especially in the abdominal area, can be a precursor to a number of serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and prostate cancer.

Testosterone’s Role In Regulating Weight And Metabolism

Testosterone is considered the king of male hormones for a number of reasons. It’s responsible for muscle strength and size, bone growth, sex drive, and sperm production, to name just a few.  However, testosterone also interacts with a number of organs and hormones in the body to regulate metabolism, and how weight is distributed.

Specifically, testosterone has been found to make a big impact on how the body regulates glucose, insulin, and fat. As testosterone levels decline, the body loses its ability to efficiently regulate these substances, which can lead to weight gain.

How Testosterone Levels Can Be Restored

Testosterone replacement therapy that is delivered by injection or topical cream can restore testosterone to healthy levels. Once testosterone levels are increased to optimal levels, the body regains its ability to efficiently regulate insulin, glucose, and fat.  Metabolism is further improved by increased muscle mass.  And as the body’s metabolism experiences a boost, weight is easier to lose, particularly from the abdominal area.

Of course healthy lifestyle habits must go hand-in-hand with testosterone replacement.  Any testosterone replacement program must include a healthy diet, adequate exercise, stress management, and healthy sleep habits.
