Low Sex Drive in Men
Low sex drive is common when hormones are imbalanced. And yet…what is considered low will vary from one man to the next. Suffice it to say that if your libido isn’t where you’d like it to be, it’s below normal for you.
Hormones That Impact Sex Drive
Low Testosterone
A man’s sex drive is fueled by testosterone. It’s like gas in your tank. Without enough, you simply won’t have a strong libido.
Estrogen (Elevated or Deficient)
That’s right…men have estrogen, too. You need small amounts of estrogen for heart, bone, and brain health. But too much estrogen is unhealthy for men and puts a damper on sex drive. On the flip side, an estrogen deficiency can also negatively impact sex drive in some men. Either extreme can occur during andropause.
The Double Whammy
Some men have low testosterone and estrogen that is imbalanced. When both occur at the same time, libido can be driven to zero.
Prolactin
While less common, some men develop elevated prolactin levels during andropause. Prolactin makes women want to hug and nurture their children. In men, prolactin can kill the desire for sex and compromise the ability to climax.
