Mood Changes in Men
The male brain contains high concentrations of testosterone when healthy. These high concentrations are important because testosterone directly impacts serotonin levels. In other words…if testosterone is low, serotonin will also be low. And low serotonin often equals symptoms like irritability and depression.
Facts
- Chronic irritability and mild to moderate depression are often caused by low testosterone.
- Imbalances in other hormones like estrogen, thyroid, DHEA, and cortisol can aggravate irritability and depression.
- Depression exists on a continuum. When mild, it can manifest as malaise or a lack of motivation.
Solutions vs. Band-Aids
When men tell their primary care provider that they’re feeling down, antidepressants are often prescribed. Side effects can include diminished sex drive, compromised sexual function, and an increase in mood swings.
What too many medical professionals don’t understand is that male depression is often caused by low testosterone and/or estrogen that is out of balance. Prescribing antidepressants is merely putting a band-aid on the root problem. An ineffective band-aid at that.
Alternatively, balancing hormones to healthy levels eliminates depression in most andropausal men.
