Trials show daily DHEA suppository relieves vaginal dryness as well as estrogen cream
At menopause, women tend to experience a variety of symptoms that make them feel less than sexy. And even when they do manage to get in the mood, vaginal dryness can make sex unenjoyable or even outright painful.
Vaginal dryness is common in menopausal women because of the steep decline in estrogen that occurs at this time of life. Normally, estrogen is responsible for keeping the tissues in the vagina strong, elastic, and well-lubricated. However, as estrogen declines, these tissues become dry, thin, and more delicate, leading to painful itching or burning sensations during intercourse.
Fortunately, there are treatments that can relieve vaginal dryness and help you get your healthy, enjoyable sex life back.
New DHEA Treatment Awaiting FDA Approval
Considering that low estrogen is the root cause of vaginal dryness, you might at first assume that replacing estrogen is the only option for treatment. However, treatment with the hormone DHEA can also help. DHEA is a precursor hormone that the body uses to create sex hormones, including the specific type of estrogen found in healthy vaginal tissue.
In a recent study, menopausal women who used a 0.5 percent DHEA vaginal suppository daily for 12 weeks reported improvement in their vaginal tissue and a significant decrease in pain during sex.
While this result is encouraging—especially for women who may be reluctant to take any form of estrogen directly—unfortunately the study only compared the DHEA treatment to a placebo. This means we do not know how well DHEA performs compared to estrogen treatment.
The new DHEA treatment is currently pending approval by the FDA.
Estrogen Treatments Available Now
The FDA approval process can be very slow, but fortunately you do not have to wait for the wheels of bureaucracy to turn in order to find relief from vaginal dryness. At Renew Woman™, we offer a variety of different treatment options designed to help improve sex for menopausal women. This includes two main treatments for vaginal dryness:
Vaginal Estrogen Cream: This cream delivers estrogen directly to vaginal tissues, to support lubrication and elasticity without alerting your overall hormonal balance.
Hormone Replacement Therapy: While estrogen is the main hormone to blame for vaginal dryness, imbalances in other hormones like testosterone can also play a role. Our hormone replacement program addresses all your vital hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA, to restore a healthy balance to your body. This not only helps improve vaginal tissue, but also helps relieve other menopause symptoms such as low sex drive, insomnia, weight gain, hot flashes, and more.
