Vaginal estrogen cream does not increase the risk of cancer or heart attack

Are you afraid menopause has killed your sex life by making intercourse painful and unenjoyable? You’re not alone. Anywhere from 25 to 70 percent of postmenopausal women may suffer from a condition called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Common symptoms include vaginal dryness, sensations of burning or irritation, painful intercourse, and frequent urinary tract infections.

Unlike other symptoms of menopause like hot flashes or mood swings, GSM symptoms do not go away after the menopause transition. Instead, they become progressively worse the longer they remain unaddressed.

The good news is that there is a safe and effective tool for combatting GSM: vaginal estrogen. The bad news is that this treatment is underutilized, partially because of misperceptions about its safety. However, newly released research may change that.

This research appears in the December issue of Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society. In a new study that followed women from the Nurses’ Health Study for more than 18 years, researchers concluded that vaginal estrogen does not put women at risk for any of the health problems that have been associated with estrogen due to flawed past research. Women can safely use vaginal estrogen to treat GSM symptoms without fear of increased risk of heart disease, stroke, hip fractures, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, or colorectal cancer.

Correcting the misperception that vaginal estrogen therapy is unsafe will benefit many women. Rather than having to rely on over-the-counter lubricants and moisturizers—which are typically the first treatment doctors advise—women can instead confidently begin vaginal estrogen therapy. Multiple past studies have shown this therapy is more effective than other treatments—and even more effective than oral estrogen—in combatting symptoms of GSM.
