Hair Loss Therapy for Women
Because hair loss is cosmetic, it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves from the medical community. What many medical professionals fail to appreciate is the emotional toll hair loss can take on a woman. We get it. And we’re here to help.
Facts About Hair Loss in Women
- Hair loss is often caused by imbalanced hormones, particularly low thyroid.
- Hair loss can also be caused by nutritional deficiencies.
- Some of the testosterone in your body routinely converts to a hormone called DHT. In some women, DHT triggers hair loss. It’s important to know, however, that only women with DHT-sensitive hair follicles (usually due to heredity) will see a correlation between DHT and hair loss.
- Imbalanced cortisol levels due to stress can cause hair loss in some women.
Method of Treatment
- First, we check thyroid levels. If diagnosed with low thyroid, our physicians can prescribe treatment. Hair loss typically stops 1-2 weeks after thyroid levels are optimized if this is the root cause. Many women will see regrowth.
- Since anemia commonly causes hair loss, we check iron levels. If you are iron-deficient, our physicians will provide instructions for iron supplementation.
- If desired, our physicians can provide a list of supplements for improving hair quality.
- If adrenal dysfunction is suspected, we check cortisol levels. If warranted, our physicians can recommend treatment for imbalanced cortisol.
- If hair loss persists and DHT sensitivity is suspected, our physicians can prescribe medication and/or recommend supplements that slow testosterone’s conversion to DHT.
The solutions to hair loss are not always obvious. We use process of elimination guided by our years of experience to uncover the root cause(s) of hair loss. This kind of strategic approach to better aging is what we bring to the table. Let’s see if we can get this figured out.
