Testosterone Therapy for Women
While often thought of as a male hormone, women also need testosterone. They just need much less of it than men. It would be a mistake, however, to think this lesser amount is unimportant. In fact, this smaller amount of testosterone does the same thing for women that a larger amount does for men. It increases sex drive and stabilizes mood. It makes it easier to build muscle and burn fat. It even sharpens mental acuity and increases energy.
Facts About Testosterone
- Many medical professionals are of the belief that women don’t need testosterone. This is false. While women don’t need very much testosterone, the small amount they do need has tremendous benefits.
- Testosterone is often the first hormone to drop off as women approach perimenopause. Deficiencies can occur at younger ages than you might think.
- A woman’s sex hormones can be thought of as a three-legged stool. Estrogen and progesterone are two legs of that stool, but testosterone is the third.
- Low sex drive is the most common complaint we hear from women with low testosterone.
- Women with insufficient testosterone will have a difficult time building and maintaining lean muscle mass.
Benefits of Testosterone
Testosterone does wonderful things for a woman’s body. In addition to improving sex drive and the ability to build lean muscle, testosterone can:
- Improve mental acuity
- Boost energy
- Stabilize mood
- Increase metabolism
- Strengthen bones
But without the right dose, these results won’t be maximized.
Not Too Little, Not Too Much
While an increasing number of medical professionals are starting to prescribe testosterone for women, dosage is not typically optimized. Instead, a one-size-fits-all approach is taken.
However, one size does not fit all when it comes to testosterone (or any other hormone). To get optimal results (like increased energy and sex drive) without side effects (like oily skin and acne), dosage must be individualized.
Method of Treatment
For most women, testosterone deficiency and treatment are overlooked when obtaining care from their PCP or gynecologist. If treatment isn’t overlooked, dosage is rarely optimized.
Our approach to testosterone replacement is unique in this regard in that we take into consideration that optimal levels vary widely from one woman to the next. Here’s how we find your ideal dose:
- We do baseline lab testing to determine your current testosterone level.
- Our physicians prescribe a low starting dose.
- There are two safe and effective methods of delivery for testosterone: via topical cream or by injection. While some women prefer to take their testosterone by injection, the vast majority of women can readily absorb testosterone through their skin.
- As part of your prescription, our physicians will give specific instructions for adding or subtracting small increments of testosterone each week.
- After six weeks, we order another lab test to ensure your levels are within safe limits, and we retest at regular intervals thereafter.
At Renew Youth, we think outside the box. We innovate. We strive to get it right for every client, every time. Our approach to testosterone replacement exemplifies that commitment to our clients’ well-being.
