Did you make any New Year’s resolutions for this year?

If you’re like most people, you did…but you may not make good on most or all of them.

And that’s ok. Everyone likes to dream big, but following through can be hard. Especially once you get thrown from “holiday life” back into “regular life”.

The good news is that you can reset and get focused on some achievable resolutions that will make a tangible difference in your health and well-being.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, read on:

Resolution #1: Establish an Exercise Habit

Experts recommend about 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity. Walking, jogging, cycling, or rowing are good options, but anything that gets your heartrate up works. Aim for five 30-minute sessions each week, plus at least a few strength-training sessions.

The combination of aerobic and strength training provides a number of benefits, especially as people age:

  • Aerobic exercise supports cardiovascular health
  • Strength training maintains or increases muscle mass
  • Weight-bearing exercise preserves bone mass

If you haven’t exercised lately, talk to your doctor before you begin a new workout program. And be patient. Getting back into shape can take a little time, but it’s worth the effort

Resolution#2: Get the Sleep Your Mind and Body Need

Have you been burning the candle at both ends? A lack of sleep puts stress on your body, which results in the release cortisol. While your body needs small amounts of cortisol to function well, too much cortisol produced over a long period of time is toxic.

Eventually, insufficient sleep can cause serious health issues, such as:

  • Weight gain
  • Cognitive decline
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Reduced sex drive and performance
  • Poor balance and increased risk for having accidents

Sleep experts recommend adults get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Getting the sleep your body needs will pay dividends where your mental and physical health are concerned.

Resolution #3: Take Care of Your Mental Health

Everyone is pretty quick to go to the doctor in response to a physical ailment. But what about mental health issues?

Stress, depression, unresolved anger, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy are just as real as a broken bone or a case of the flu. Unfortunately, people rarely look for help with these issues until the problems are severe.

Taking care of yourself means taking care of your physical and your mental health.

And to that end, there are a number of resources you can turn to. These include professional therapists, counselors, and clergy.

Emotional and mental health problems are real and should not be ignored.

Resolution #4: Eat Better…You Are What You Eat

“Garbage in, garbage out” as they say.

A diet that includes complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and foods that are rich in fiber and antioxidants will provide your body with the nutrients it needs. Avoid unhealthy fats, simple carbs, and too much salt.

Resolution #5: See Your Primary Care Doctor

Most serious medical conditions can be resolved if discovered early enough. This includes heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and many kinds of cancer.

An annual checkup can give your primary care doctor a chance to detect medical issues while they can still be addressed.

Resolution #6: Get Your Hormones Checked

Hormones make everything in your body work properly.

But with age, your body will produce less of the important hormones it needs to function optimally. This can lead to medical issues ranging from weight gain and muscle loss to low sex drive and mood swings.

Properly monitored hormone replacement therapy using bioidentical hormones can restore your hormones to optimal levels, so your body’s systems can perform at their best.

Pick a Resolution and Get Started

Each of these resolutions can stand on its own. The important thing is to pick something and work on it. And if you’re feeling ambitious, tackle more than one.
