Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can go a long way toward helping you to look and feel your best. But it doesn’t end there.

Your mental and physical health also improve.

Read on to find out how BHRT can have a positive impact on your health overall.

  1. Reduced inflammation
  2. Inflammation is how your body responds when under attack from viruses, bacteria, or injury. It occurs when your white blood cells release chemicals into your body to encourage extra blood flow to the affected tissues. This can result in pain, fever, and swelling.

Acute (short term) inflammation is a natural part of your body’s healing process. But chronic (long term) inflammation is a different matter. Chronic inflammation generally occurs where no viral or bacterial causes are present, nor any recent injury. Instead, your immune system is “tricked” into producing inflammation where it isn’t needed…or for a longer period of time than needed.

With age, the human body is often increasingly susceptible to the effects of chronic inflammation.

Conditions related to chronic inflammation include (to name just a few):

    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Heart disease
    • Cancer
    • Diabetes
    • Alzheimer’s

Several studies have identified a relationship between hormone imbalance and conditions related to chronic inflammation. BHRT can be used to stabilize hormones to optimal levels, thereby minimizing the effects of inflammation on your long-term health.

  3.  Cell repair and replacement
  4. Your body continually repairs and replaces damaged and worn-out cells. Hormones are vitally important to this process.

In particular, testosterone and estrogen play important roles in the maintenance and growth of bone and muscle. Growth hormone is responsible for cell growth and repair in general. Hormones have even been linked to your body’s production of CPCs (chondrogenic progenitor cells) which maintain and repair cartilage in your joints.

  5. Sleep
  6. Quality sleep is critical to your physical and mental health. During sleep, your body repairs damaged cells and processes memories from the previous day.

Low testosterone (in men) and low progesterone (in women) can make a good night’s sleep hard to come by. Imbalanced hormones can also cause sleep apnea, anxiety, and night sweats, all of which can disrupt sleep.

Poor sleep quality can also be caused by reduced production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy in response to reduced daylight.

  7.  Immune system support
  8. Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense against viruses and bacteria. And balanced hormones are critical to a strong immune system.

For years, researchers have known that pre-menopausal women are less vulnerable to the common cold and flu than men of similar age…but this difference disappears after menopause. Estrogen appears to enhance the effectiveness of immune cells like neutrophils and T-cells. And progesterone regulates the production of cytokines…the immune cells that initiate the good kind of inflammation needed to fight off infection.

Meanwhile, growth hormone stimulates your immune system to produce pathogen-fighting cells like antibodies, T-cells, red and white blood cells, and microphages.

Thyroid hormone also appears to play a role in your innate immunity by recognizing and reacting to intruders it hasn’t seen before.

Inversely, excess cortisol in your bloodstream due to long-term stress can cause excessive inflammation….which can lead to autoimmune conditions like arthritis.

But why BHRT?

It used to be that synthetic hormones were the standard when it came to hormone replacement therapy. However, synthetic hormones are slightly different at the molecular level from what your body produces naturally on its own. When introduced into the human body, these differences can have unintended consequences that take away from the intended results.

Bioidentical hormone replacement, on the other hand, uses hormones that are biologically identical to the natural hormones in your own body. As long as your hormone levels remain within optimal ranges, unwanted side effects are avoided.
