New research shows link between an active sex life and reduced heart attack risk
Are you looking for more ways to help keep your heart healthy? You may want to add more frequent sex to the list, according to research recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
After analyzing blood samples from nearly 2,000 men and women between the ages of 20 and 59, researchers from the National Defence Medical Centre in Taiwan discovered a correlation between homocysteine levels and sexual activity in men. Men who reported having sex at least twice per week had the lowest levels, while men who said they had sex once a month or less had the highest levels. There was no significant variation among the women in the study group.
Why Homocysteine Matters
Homocysteine occurs naturally in the body. In small amounts, it serves as a building block for proteins. But in excess, homocysteine can damage the blood vessels that supply the heart. High homocysteine can increase risk of a fatal heart attack by 66 percent. It can also increase the risk of a stroke by 33 percent, and it has been linked with Alzheimer’s and cancer as well.
Researchers suspect that men who are sexually active have lower homocysteine levels because frequent sex can support better circulation and healthier blood vessels. Perhaps because blood flow is less important for women’s sexuality, the link between frequent sex and low homocysteine was not seen in women.
